SportsMEDIA Technology Corp., based in Durham, provides graphics and real-time statistical information to networks carrying major sporting events.

The company is responsible for the scores shown at the bottom of TV screens and statistics such as how many rebounds each team has at half-time.

“Every statistic you see during a CBS broadcast comes from two sports media guys on site at each arena,” Senior Operations Producer Lee Brinson said.

Representatives say the 50-person company specializes in enhancing televised sporting events.

For football games, they add “1st and 10” graphics and the yellow first-down line.

“We sort of pride ourselves on being a niche company that provides high-end service to the best and biggest networks,” Vice President of Business Development Don Tupper said.

Technician Brian Hunt is a huge NASCAR fan. “This is pretty much a dream job working on NASCAR events for a living,” he said.

Managers said the economy has not hurt the company. They say it has meant more people are home watching games.

SportsMEDIA Technology has been in business for about 20 years.
