ACC fans get superstitious on Friday the 13th

Atlanta — Some fans attending the Atlantic Coast Conference took extra precautions to ward away any bad luck on “Friday the 13th.”

Kim Oak, a fan of the University of North Carolina, wore her lucky socks to the Tar Heel game. She said it was her ritual for all Carolina games.

Friday the 13th makes some ACC fans nervous

While some fans have lucky jerseys or hats, Duke fan Bobby Bascomb brought his lucky blue Converse sneakers and a blue and white necklace with the Duke emblem.

Other fans felt this Friday the 13th was just another day of the month.

“I’m not superstitious,” North Carolina State University fan Edie Nightingale said. “March 13th was my parents wedding anniversary, so I think it’s a good day.”

Gene Hansbrough, father of UNC player Tyler Hansbrough, said he broke the superstition with Friday the 13th when he was 18. Unlike his star basketball-playing son, Hansbrough was a high jumper in college and always wanted to jump 7 feet high.

“On Friday, March 13th, I jumped 7 feet high for the first time in my life,” Gene Hansbrough said. “So, I don’t worry about Friday the 13th anymore.”
