Garner woman dies after shooting outside home

GARNER, N.C. — A Garner woman shot outside her house Tuesday morning has died, and authorities have charged a man who was also shot with first-degree murder.

June P. Carlyle, 49, of 800 Creech Road, died Tuesday afternoon at WakeMed, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said.

Jose Manuel Valdez-Masias, 44, of 1896 Spring Drive, Garner, was listed in fair condition at WakeMed. Harrison said Valdez-Masias would likely be arrested upon his hospital release.

Deputies responded to Carlyle's home around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Harrison said the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute. He declined to comment further about the investigation.

One witness, however, told WRAL News Carlyle was shot point-blank in the head. Authorities would not confirm that detail.

Carlyle operated a construction cleaning service out of the house, according to her daughter, Brandi Carlyle. Every morning, workers arrive at the house, get into trucks and head to work, she said.

Valdez-Masias was a former employee, other workers said. He arrived at the house with a gun, shot Carlyle and then shot himself in the stomach, they said.

Carlyle said that she was in the house sleeping when she heard three gunshots and saw one of the workers outside. At the time of the interview, she was not sure where her mother was and had assumed she went to work.

"I'm hoping everybody is fine, and maybe they can get down to the bottom and see why all this happened," Carlyle said.
