Police were looking for a man late Monday and were looking into speculation that an altercation in the Person County Courthouse spilled out into the street.

ROXBORO, N.C. — One person was killed and a second wounded Monday afternoon in a shooting in downtown Roxboro, police said.

The shooting occurred at about 12:30 p.m. in front of Yesterday's Interiors, at 124 S. Main St. near the Person County Courthouse, police said.

City Manager Jon Barlow said the two victims, whose names authorities withheld, were shot three times each.

The motive for the shooting hadn't been determined as of Monday evening, Barlow said.

Trixie Wright said she thinks she saw the people involved in the shooting in Superior Court Monday morning.

"Every time the guy moved, they moved. Everywhere he went to sit, they moved to sit beside him, and then he moved to the back bench and they just sat right there with him," Wright said.

Capt. Tony Kirby of the Roxboro Police Department said police were looking into a possible courthouse connection to the shooting.

Police questioned and released one person and issued an arrest warrant for a second person, identified as Matthew Euliss Long, 20, Kirby said.

He said he was thankful that no one else was wounded, considering the shooting occurred downtown during the lunch hour.

Wright said she was frightened when she heard the shots.

"It's real scary because you don't really know which way the bullets are going to fly, and if you don't have anything to do with it, you are innocent and you don't want to get shot," she said.

Anyone who knows Long's whereabouts was asked to call Roxboro police at 336-599-8345.
