KINSTON, N.C. — The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office has charged a Camp Lejuene Marine with child abuse in the Wednesday death of his 2-year-old stepson.

Detectives determined that the boy's stepfather, Iran Rashad Terrell, 22, whose rank was not given, was "present and participated in the death of the infant," according to a press release.

Paramedics said that Jailyn McCoy, who was 2 years and 8 months old, was unresponsive and not breathing when they arrived at his home on British Road in Kinston. The boy's mother, Ashley Stallings, 22, had called 911 and performed CPR on the toddler, investigators said.

Jailyn and Stallings were taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital, but the toddler was pronounced dead at 3:18 p.m.

The state medical examiner's office in Greenville will conduct an autopsy Friday to determine the cause of death, deputies said.

Terrell was charged with one count of felony child abuse. He was being held Thursday in the Lenoir County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond.

Investigators said that Terrell is an active-duty Marine stationed at Camp Lejuene. They did not give his unit.

The Lenoir County Department of Social Services took custody of Stallings' other two children, a 4-year-old girl and 3-month-old boy. They have been released into the custody of their natural father's immediate family.
