Slain trooper's infant son dies

Posted October 17, 2008

— The infant son of a slain trooper died late Thursday at Mission Hospitals in Asheville, according to hospital officials.

Tye Blanton was born prematurely, two weeks before his father's death.

Trooper David Shawn Blanton, 24, was shot to death in June during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near Canton.

The public reached out to help his wife, Michaela Blanton, who was dealing with her husband's death and their infant son's medical problems.

Lara Feinberg, president of Families for Roadside Safety, Inc., sent an e-mail Friday morning announcing the news that Tye had died. Asheville hospital officials confirmed the news.

Tye underwent heart surgery at Duke University Children's Hospital in Durham last month. At the time, hospital officials said he had a number of serious medical conditions, including heart problems.

The State Employees Credit Union set up a fund for the Blanton family. Donations can be made at any North Carolina SECU branch.

In July, a Haywood County Superior Court judge ruled that prosecutors could seek the death penalty against Edwardo Wong III, 37, of Ormond Beach, Fla., who is charged in Blanton’s death.

I know that there are no words to ease your pain right now, but your little fella is safe in his Dad's arms right now and the two are at peace. The love of family is what you hold onto right now to get through the tough times. Know that your LEO extended family has you in their thoughts and prayers at all times and is there for you too.

    God Bless You.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know that I've read your comments and I've received several e-mails asking where to send cards, etc. to Michaela Blanton. The hospital in Asheville is not releasing Michaela's contact information, which is understandable. So, unfortunately, I don't have an address for you to send cards or other items. When I contacted the hospital previously, they told me that the best thing to do is to make a donation at any State Employees Credit Union branch, if you wish. I hope this helps answer your questions. Thanks for all the feedback. - Kelly Hinchcliffe (WRAL.com web editor)
