FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police say someone stabbed a woman to death while she was walking with her husband near their house on Baxter Street Tuesday night.

The woman was stabbed in the neck, and the husband had minor injuries, police said. The husband was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. Police would not discuss the nature of his wounds.

Police have not named any suspects.

“The husband stated that he somehow turned back around and his wife was being attacked,” Fayetteville Police Department spokeswoman Theresa Chance said.

The husband told detectives he ran toward the person stabbing his wife and the person ran away. The husband said he then ran to a neighbor's house for help.

Authorities did not release the couple's names. However, the wife was and the husband is in the military. The husband is a Special Operations soldier, police said.

A spokesman for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg could not be reached for comment.

Detectives described the victim as a white woman in her 20s. She died on the way to a local hospital, detectives said.

“It looks like what killed her was a cut to her neck,” Chance said.

The Army plans to release the woman's name on Thursday. It’s protocol for the Army to wait 24 hours after notifying the family.

The Army’s Criminal Investigations Division is assisting in the investigation, Chance said.

The stabbing happened near the intersection of Southview Circle around 9 p.m.

A neighbor, Anne Knight, said the couple moved into the neighborhood about two months ago. She said the area is typically very safe.

“We do have a few neighbors that came forth and said they heard someone screaming, ‘Help me! Help me!’ But we have no screams from a female or anything like that,” Chance said.
