Halifax deputies search for two men in shooting

Two men armed with a shotgun shot another man at a Scotland Neck home and then fled through a cotton field Friday night, Halifax County sheriff's deputies said.

SCOTLAND NECK, N.C. — The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is searching for two men that it believes shot another man Friday night.

Deputies said Leslie O'Neill Day was shot at a house on Shields Commissary Road in Scotland Neck around 9 p.m. The two shooters were armed with a shotgun.

Day was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was listed in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said the shooters fled the scene on foot and ran through a cotton field behind the house toward Kehukie Baptist Church on Sherman Drive. Deputies said the two men might have gotten into a vehicle parked nearby and left the area.

Investigators said the two men should have a lot of red clay on their shoes.
