Rocky Mount Police push for teen curfew

With violent crime on the rise, authorities in Rocky Mount are pushing for a curfew for teens.

The curfew would make it illegal for anyone 16-years-old or younger to be on the streets from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights. On weekends the curfew would be midnight to 6 a.m.

Rocky Mount Police Chief John Manley said after 11 p.m. crimes tend to get “more violent and persons become more susceptible to be the victim of a crime.”

So far this year the city has seen 11 murders, three deaths shy last year’s total.

To help curb the surge in violent crime police have added officers to its Street Engagement Team. Several roundups have produced numerous arrests, and pulled more than 300 guns off the street this year.

Despite those efforts Manley said crime continues to increase.

“We do tend to see a lot of violent crime among youths,” Manley said.

If the curfew is passed by the city council, officers would bring teens home and, in cases of repeat offenders, have the right to bill parents for their time. The curfew would also make exceptions for teens working or participating in certain activities.

The council plans a public hearing on the curfew on Sept. 29.

After researching similar plans in other states, Manley believes a curfew would be an effective tool but not the sole solution.

“It’s going to take a community wide effort,” Manley said.

The local United Way is using grant money to fund a new gang prevention program.

“It will have prevention, education and suppression built into it,” said Ginny Mohrbutter, county coordinator of the Rocky Mount Area United Way Volunteer Center.

PARENTS, PARENTS, PARENTS.... You know what to do, so do it... Why do the county in a whole have to take what is obviously not being done. If your child is under 18 and out and about at wee hours of the night and not gainfully employed. You know better. tsk - tsk.

There should be a curfew in all counties of NC where their youth are the primary problem in regards to crime, whether gang related or not. Unless you are holding a job & paying out some money for bills, basic items(food, gas, insurance), I feel there is no need for any extra activity. Yeah they can go out & hang out w/friends...I am not saying keep them caged as animals but at some point there in their lives there needs to be some type of guidelines and not do as you please and destroy your life by a stupid mistake by being out after 12mid night etc.

Rocky Mount has no clue what to do and are trying to throw a patch on the mess they created. I was a Rocky Mount Police Officer for 10+ yrs and know how messed up that dept is. There needs to be a real change from chief through all of his "command staff." They are all in the job for the wrong reason and it has translated down to the line officers. When the main focus of the command staff is how to get the officers and keep from offending a citizen by policing them you will have these problems.I got out less than 3 months ago and it is the best thing I ever did. Working for a real command staff and know what it is like to work for a police agency that backs their officers and wants real police work to be done not just baby sit thugs. Good luck in RMT.

I believe it's more about "it's 11:00 pm, do you know where your PARENT is?!?!?"

The police shouldn't have to impose a curfew. THE PARENTS SHOULD. AND IT SHOULD BE BEFORE 11:00PM!!! Where are the moms and dads that cared? I guess they left with June and Ward Cleaver.
