Abandoned building collapses in downtown Wilson
Authorities said workers inside the building were removing roof support structures when the outside wall and roof collapsed.
Posted — UpdatedWILSON, N.C. — Four people were able to escape from an abandoned warehouse in Wilson Thursday morning after its roof collapsed, fire officials said.
The building, which sits at 131 E. Pettigrew St. in downtown Wilson, has been condemned, and a crew had demolished it by Thursday afternoon.
Capt. Kevin Hubbard, with the Wilson Fire Department, said the four workers were inside the building removing roof support structures, which put strain on the building's outside wall. As the wall began to collapse, the roof also fell.
"It came down like a domino effect," said Samuel Edwards, one of the workers inside. "It just came down, slow. Then, it collapsed."
There were no reports of serious injuries, but one of the workers was treated for minor injuries.
"Had they not have seen the collapse beginning, early on, it could have been a lot worse when we got here," Hubbard said.
The workers were there to demolish the building for a nearby church, which has plans to turn the lot into a parking lot.
