Fort Bragg, N.C. — An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper died early Wednesday morning as a result of a gunshot wound, the U.S. Army said Friday.
Spc. Jonathan R. Singer, 22, of Lakeview, N.Y., had been a paratrooper with the 508th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team since August 2007 and had been deployed to Afghanistan.
Police said Singer was found unresponsive inside his 2002 Chevrolet at about 1:30 a.m. in a parking lot near Morganton and Reilly roads in Fayetteville.
Singer joined the Army in October 2006 and was the recipient of various awards and decorations, including the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Meal and the Parachutist's Badge.
He is survived by his mother, Wilda Singer, of Miami.
