CARRBORO, N.C. — A Violence Prevention Training Class was held Saturday in memory of a murdered University of North Carolina at Charlotte student.

Irina Yarmolenko, who is from Chapel Hill, was found dead on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly on May 5. Police said the 20-year-old was asphyxiated.

On Saturday the department held an event to teach women, ages 13 to 65, self-defense moves.

The Realistic Female Self-Defense Company and the Personal Defense Readiness division of BLAUER Tactical Systems Inc. organized the event in conjunction with Yarmolenko's brother, Pavel Yarmolenko.
