ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Authorities cancelled a Silver Alert for a missing 89-year-old Roanoke Rapids man after he was found in Virginia.

Arthur Esmond Elliot became the subject of a Silver Alert, which are issued for missing elderly people believed to be suffering from a cognitive impairment, around 6:30 a.m.

Roanoke Rapids police said that Elliot was found safe and unharmed in Surry County, in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. The alert was cancelled around 9:30 a.m.

Police had said they believed Elliot was driving a gray Buick north or south from Roanoke Rapids along Interstate 95.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
