Investigators ruled that the shooting of a 13-year-old boy who died from his injuries was accidental.

Officers found Devonta Maykell Carpenter at his grandmother's house at 1106 Churchill Ave. around 4:50 p.m. Saturday. Carpenter had been shot in the chest and was transported to Wilson Medical Center, where he died.

Carpenter, who recently completed the fifth grade at Daniels Learning Center, was injured when he mishandled a firearm, investigators said Monday.

Investigators will meet with the Wilson County District Attorney's Office to determine if any charges should be filed. That follows standard procedure for any death investigation.

Daniel's Learning Center is a school in Wilson for children who have serious issues. At 13 yrs. old, this child has probably had more problems than I have had at 50. My heart goes out to him, and his obviously troubled life...

Well,

I don't keep all of them unaccessable. There is a handgun in a fast action gunsafe and a 12 ga pump that is secure but can be accessed about as quick.

I keep mine out in the open so I and my wife or child can get to it fast for self-defense. Judge Scalia said it's OK. That storage law is unconstitutional. You can't require triggerlocks or dismantlement in a citizen's home.

13 years old in the 5th grade? That's the normal age for 8th grade is'nt it? Seriously though, there is a "safe storage of firearms law". I keep mine locked up to prevent such things from happening.

What was a 13yr old doing in 5th grade?
