Police identify slain Wilson teen

A 13-year-old boy died of a gunshot wound to the chest Saturday afternoon, but Wilson police said Monday they weren't looking for a gunman.

WILSON, N.C. — A 13-year-old boy died Saturday after being shot in the chest in Wilson, police said.

Officers responding to calls about a person shot around 4:50 p.m. Saturday found Devonta Maykell Carpenter at 1106 Churchill Ave. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Police said Carpenter was visiting his grandmother's house when the shooting occurred. The case remains under investigation, but police said Monday morning they weren't actively looking for anyone in connection with the shooting.
