Sunday should be the hottest day of the heat wave, which could last until mid June.
Raleigh-International Airport hit a record high 100 degrees on Saturday.
Thompson stresses staying hydrated because "if you start off dehydrated it will only get worse."
The next few days will be the hottest the Triangle has seen since last August and September.
Thompson said we may start seeing a break from the record high temperatures by mid-week.
The Division of Air Quality's rating for the Triangle is orange, which means active children and adults and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
Gov. Mike Easley is urging citizens to take precautions against heat stroke.
The state departments of Health and of Crime Control and Public Safety suggest these tips for keeping cool:
- Do not leave children or animals in a parked car, even for just a few minutes.
- Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, especially if you must spend time outside.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Use sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from sunburn.
- Stay indoors in air-conditioning if possible.
- Take a cool shower or bath.
- Avoid cooking with the stove and oven.
