Durham police: Robbers hit RBC Bank branch, flee in stolen car

Posted May 28, 2008

— Two armed men robbed a Durham bank Wednesday morning and then fled in a car stolen earlier in the day, police reported.

The green Nissan Sentra, license plate WXZ-2962, was reported stolen shortly after midnight Wednesday on Woodway Club Drive. A man told police he had just parked the car when a man approached, pointed a gun at him and demanded the keys.

At 10:45 a.m., witnesses told police that two masked men entered the bank, showed a gun and ordered everyone to the floor. The men took an undisclosed amount of money, then fled the RBC Bank branch at 2313 N.C. Highway 54, in what police believe was the same car.

Durham police found the stolen vehicle unoccupied and still running at Sal’s Pizza at 2223 N.C. Highway 54, they said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator K.D. Emanuel at 560-4420, ext. 235, Crime Stoppers at 683-1200, the FBI at 233-7701 or (704) 377-9200 or the N.C. Bankers’ Association hotline at (800) 209-2293.

Crime Stoppers and the North Carolina Bankers’ Association are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

They will be caught. Robbing a bank is one of the most stupid things an individual can do.

Whos going to chase the bank robbers NOW.... They are bicycles and since these crooks at the c-stores will not give them any free gas I guess they will be circling the area in the bicycles instead. Also an armed guard in a bank wont do any good because he will spend time on smoke breaks because there will be nothing else to do or they will hire some senior citizen to watch the bank....Get a clue

I think you're right, the security where I am from is a bit higher (many places have bullet-proof glass, definitely have guards, etc). Not to mention, it just seems like the police solve the unthinkable there when it comes to bank robberies or robberies of armored vehicles. The capture rate is far higher. It's a shame, really.

Every bank should have an armed guard, but not in uniform.

I work for a credit union and it bothers me that this state has such a high bank robbery rate. It's like if they only take the money and don't hurt anyone its okay. I just don't get it!

Jh5230, the last numbers I saw indicated only 33% of bank robberies in NC were solved or closed. Perhaps that's why there's so many!

To me, this translates to everyone can rob 2 banks before you have a 100% change of being caught!

Seriously, I can't say for certain, but isn't security higher at the banks were your from?

Does anybody want to take a bet one or both robbers are convicted felons already on probation for other offenses?
