A meeting was held Monday evening to let residents comment on proposed improvements to the U.S. Highway 64 corridor in Chatham and Wake counties.

Three alternate plans were posted at Apex High School, 1501 Laura Duncan Road, from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. They will also be up at Northwood High School, 310 Northwood School Road in Pittsboro, during the same hours on Tuesday.

State Department of Transportation officials want to formulate a 30-year master plan with short- and long-term ways to deal with expected growth along the corridor in western Wake and eastern Chatham.

Possibilities include upgrading the route to an expressway from U.S. Highway 1 in Cary to the U.S. 64 Bypass east of Pittsboro. Removing a number of stoplights and widening the highway are also options being considered.

Transportation officials said they aim to approve a plan sometime this summer.

No funding has been set aside for the proposed improvements.

Development along US 64 is accelerating; the area around NC 55 especially is growing very quickly. After US 64 was widened to four lanes (one of many good projects NCDOT did that no one pays attention to) it was for years a great drive to Asheboro. Now there are traffic signals sprouting up between Cary and Jordan Lake and "new subdivision!" signs at nearly all the intersections.

BTW, WRAL, US 64 is already an expressway. That's a multilane highway with limited access (few driveways) and at grade intersections. Even the Cary section is an expressway, just a soon-to-be congested one. I believe NCDOT is discussing making the route a freeway in the far future...

DrunkSober: "What do you mean minutes from the airport? To get to the airport or RTP or Chapel hill, you gotta go via cary which is always past its prime.I doubt any growth is coming to Pittsboro in the next 100 years."

I said "Once the Western Wake Expressway is built...."

DrunkSober -- Have you been to Pittsboro lately? Homes are being built everywhere; we have developments in town and outside of town, and a shopping center is being built across from the high school. Sounds like it is time for you to visit and check out the new restaurants! :-)

Drunksober what are you talking about? You can head straight out Hwy 64 toward Pittsboro and then head north on a number of roads toward Durham and Chapel Hill. Obviously you've not been south of Chapel Hill recently to see the immense growth going on between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. Nor have you noticed all the growth going on in Apex out toward the Chatham County line. Your naive comments make it clear you've not been in this area in a long time.
