GARNER, N.C. — Ladybugs flew over Lake Benson on Saturday afternoon to mark the second Mother's Day weekend since Michelle Young was found beaten to death in her Wake County home.

The four-hour memorial began at 1 p.m. at a picnic shelter in Lake Benson Park in Garner. Participants set loose numerous ladybugs at 2 p.m.

Participants also were invited to dress as ladybugs, and representations of the insect graced other games and activities.

Young's mother said her daughter loved ladybugs. Supporters of the family also sold ladybug-themed Christmas ornaments to benefit a scholarship of Young's daughter, Cassidy, in December.

Young was found dead on Nov. 3, 2006. At the time, she was pregnant. Cassidy, then 2, was by her side, unharmed.

Police have not made an arrest or named any suspects in the case.

Cassidy is staying with her father, Jason Young, and his family in western North Carolina. He was there when his wife's body was found.
