Hollister man shot while giving driver directions

Posted May 7, 2008

— A Hollister man was shot in the shoulder Tuesday as he tried to give directions to a driver in a parking lot.

Waverly Burgess, 25, was at a Griffin store in Red Oak when a green Ford Expedition pulled up and the driver asked for directions, Nash County authorities said.

As Burgess gave directions, the driver then demanded his wallet. When Burgess refused, one of the passengers in the back of the vehicle pulled out a gun and shot Burgess in the right shoulder, authorities said.

He was listed in stable condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital Wednesday. Authorities said they do not believe Burgess knew the three men in the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office does not know the men’s identities, other than they are black, or the vehicle’s tag number.

The Ford Expedition was last seen traveling on State Route 1003, near Red Oak Road.

Maybe when they catch and convice some of these to lazy to work morons, they should stand them up in front of a brick wall and shoot them in the shoulder. If that was done they might think twice about doing it a second time, or a third or a fourth or a tenth.

I do hope they catch them.

More common than you think.... and they wonder why we feel the way we do.

It's a sad world when you don't even feel safe giving directions. I've been a pretty trusting/unassuming person, but that is rapidly changing.

I hate to do it, but I may start carrying a 'dummy' wallet with nothing but Food Lion VIP cards in it to hand over if asked. I'm sure as soon as they got it they'd drive right off.

This is why I don't help anyone. Sorry, but thats the world today. Car broke down? I'm driving right by. Need a jump? Not from me.

Griffen's???? Geez, that is a pretty busy store in Red Oak. Awful!

Yeah, you can't even stop and help people these days.

Yeahm you can never be too careful. I was going to pull over and help this couple struggling with a carpet in the back of a truck, but decided not to take the risk of them being crazies...

It will end; when the world comes to an end.

Trying to be nice and help someone, and this is what he gets. I can't say on here what I really want to.
