— A second student has been arrested in a prank that turned into a bomb scare at Campbell University last week.

Harnett County deputies charged Adam Bailey, of Clayton, with possession of explosives on school property.

Thomas Nathan Minor, 19, of Fuquay-Varina, faces the same charge. He was arrested Friday and made bond Saturday.

School officials said it appeared to be an exam-week prank.

Emergency crews evacuated Kitchin Hall, a dorm that houses 96 men, at about 4:30 a.m. Friday following a report of a chemical odor inside, Harnett County sheriff's deputies said.

No one was injured, but sheriff's investigators said several people complained of trouble breathing. None of them required medical attention.

Investigators said an explosive device made of a plastic bottle and chemicals that react when combined caused the fumes. One was placed in the dorm's first-floor hallway and three others outside, authorities said.

If you watched the WRAL reports, it happened on the day that the students were going home for the summer.

This is the first time I've ever heard of this type of problem at Campbell! Most of the students genuinely appreciate the opportunity to get a quality education.

How terrible that the dorm mates had to evacuate the building at 4:30am on an exam day! I hope they expel anyone involved in such a worthless act! Such a waste of human spirit!

This sounds like my wife's cooking.

Not sure this should be described as a "bomb". Did it explode?

  • russh198 May 6, 2008

My guess would be that it was a Drain-o bomb. It expands inside a 2-litre bottle, and then the bottle explodes. The plastic explodes, but the liquid stays in the bottom of the bottle. makes a loud boom.

"Second Campbell student arrested in bomb prank"

Bad lead.... how about just add the word "stink" to the bomb....... there's a world of difference.

I have a son that lived in that dorm for two years, and I certainly care about the young men in there. It was a stupid thing to do, but c'mon...

"The University and Sheriff's Department both have stated that it was a harmless prank with no intention to harm anyone yet everyone is in a big hurry to ruin their lives. In fact, the Sheriff himself stated to the Dunn Daily Record that he didn't want to reveal the materials used because every kid in the country would be making them."

Well then WRAL needs to update their dadgum story.

    Amen, injohnstonco.

I'm not ranting against them. I'm simply saying I know what can happen. Not will, but could. I simply want to know. WHAT EXPLOSIVES? And we only have to look as far as Durham to see what can happen to college kids when a bad DA gets behind muchado about nothing. In this post 911 society, some people have lost all common sense, as well as a sense of proportion.

"That's the spirit Johnston and mrk, with little or no information go out and rant against the Sheriff's Office instead of the people that caused the problem in the first place"

Actually those of you who have already convicted the boys in question should wait to get all the facts before you try to bury them under the prison. The University and Sheriff's Department both have stated that it was a harmless prank with no intention to harm anyone yet everyone is in a big hurry to ruin their lives. In fact, the Sheriff himself stated to the Dunn Daily Record that he didn't want to reveal the materials used because every kid in the country would be making them. I'm glad we have so many perfect citizens that never pulled a prank or made a bad decision as a teenager.

Didn't Campbell cut their security in half last year when nearly every other university was adding security? In light of campus incidents recently, why would a university want less security?
