A U.S. Army soldier was shot and wounded during a robbery outside a nightclub early Saturday, police said.

Sergio Sanchez, 22, happened upon a robbery outside Sharkey's Night Club, at Blue Street and Washington Drive, shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Sanchez, who recently returned to Fort Bragg after a tour of duty in Iraq, was shot in the neck, police said.

Sanchez was critically injured and taken to the trauma center at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he underwent surgery.

Investigators said they had no suspects and only a vague suspect description of a gunman.

Anyone who was at Sharky's Cabaret Friday night or early Saturday is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1856 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.

He was shot in the neck with a 12 gauge, he was been declared brain dead this afternoon. They will probably never find out who it was if he was the only witness. Unless some idiot brags about the shooting, we will never know who did it.

In an article in the fayobserver the owner of Sharkey's said he was 3 football fields away. He must have a big parking lot because the soldier was shot in the Sharkey's parking lot.

Criminals see the haircut, know that many of them just came back from overseas and have money to spend and then rob, murder, whatever the soldiers.

How sad, to come back safely from the combat zone, and get shot at home.

I wonder if Fayetteville has IED's.

Such a sad story and this man is a hero. How could someone shot him like that as if he was an animal. Praying for his recovery and the family. Hope that they find out very soon, who did this to this soldier.
