Soldier shot in Fayetteville robbery

Shooting

A U.S. Army soldier was shot and wounded during a robbery outside a nightclub early Saturday, police said.

Sergio Sanchez, 22, happened upon a robbery outside Sharkey's Night Club, at Blue Street and Washington Drive, shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Sanchez, who recently returned to Fort Bragg after a tour of duty in Iraq, was shot in the neck, police said.

Sanchez was critically injured and taken to the trauma center at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he underwent surgery.

Investigators said they had no suspects and only a vague suspect description of a gunman.

Anyone who was at Sharky's Cabaret Friday night or early Saturday is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1856 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
