SHARPSBURG, N.C. — Hospital officials said a bicyclist involved in an accident with a vehicle on Saturday was substantially intoxicated at the time of the accident.
Bicyclist Billy Jenkins, of Sharpsburg, was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital with life threatening critical head injuries. He was unconscious and had very weak vital signs at the scene

The accident occurred in the 4100 block of Hathaway Boulevard.

Police said Richard Curry, of Rocky Mount, was driving a Toyota Camry on Hathaway Boulevard south towards Wilson when he said a person riding a bicycle rode out in front of his car. Curry told police he tried to stop but was unable to because of the wet roads and the closeness of the bicycle.
Jenkins had just left the ABC store near the scene of the accident, according to police. The ABC store clerk reported that Jenkins had just stolen bottles of Gin and Vodka.

Police recovered both bottles from Jenkins on the scene of the accident.

Jenkins had outstanding warrants on file with Wilson County Sheriff’s Office for communicating threats and failure to appear on misdemeanor larceny.

No charges have been filed at this time.
