Emergency Workers Fight Brush, Underground Fires

An underground fire which started about a week ago in Johnston County was finally put out on Thursday, according to the Smithfield Fire Department.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — An underground fire which started about a week ago in Johnston County was finally put out on Thursday, according to the Smithfield Fire Department.

Johnston County Emergency Management said the fire started about a week ago, but the agency was just notified Thursday. The fire was put out about 7:15 p.m., officials said.

Also, the state Forestry Service was working a 20-acre brush fire at 4276 Glendale Road near Kenly.
