A missing High Point man who was the subject of a Silver Alert early Monday was found safely in Orange County.

A passing motorist picked up Bobby Gean Gregory, 71, along Interstate 85 in Efland and brought him to a weigh station shortly before 9 a.m., according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

About the same time, deputies got another call from a motorist who spotted Gregory's car near exit 161.

Gregory told deputies he had run out of gas. He was safe and unharmed, officials said.

Gregory had last been seen at his High Point home, and authorities believed he might have been trying to get to Gaffney, S.C.

His family recently moved to High Point.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
