Lorenzo Charles is known for one special dunk. He sank the game-winning basket that secured the national championship for N.C. State in 1983.
Twenty-five years later, people still ask.
"I get that question all the time – 'Can you still dunk?'" Charles laughed. "I haven't tried to dunk in a long time. I know I can still touch the rim."
Charles showed his shooting touch is intact earlier this week at his old stomping grounds of Reynolds Coliseum. "I still got it," he said of his shot, but he's glad he doesn't have to run the court anymore.
Charles's basketball career took him all over the world. Since he left the sport eight years ago, Charles has settled back in the Triangle.
"I feel like this is my family down here in North Carolina, the Wolfpack family," he said.
The Wolfpack family surprised Charles recently by honoring his jersey during the 25th reunion of the championship team.
"That was unbelievable," Charles recalled. "To see my jersey framed like that and knowing they were going to put it up in the roof, that's just something that's hard to explain."
When it comes to basketball, Charles is pretty much limited to his driveway now, but a 40-and-over league in Cary sure would like him to play. Problem is, they want to see the Lorenzo Charles from 1983.
"That's what they remember and that's what they want to see," he laughed. "So I prefer to just sit on the side and look good."
