Arrest Made in Apex Store Robbery

Police have arrested a man suspected of using a handgun to rob a GNC store in Beaver Creek Commons on Monday evening.

Daniel Wayne Callis, 47, of 907 Charlmers Ave., Durham, faces a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Police arrested Callis on Wednesday after spotting his car in Durham.

Police charge that Callis walked into the GNC store at the shopping center, off U.S. Highway 64 and N.C. Highway 55, around 6:30 p.m.

Footage from surveillance cameras shows that the robber came up to the counter and talked to the clerk about some vitamins he said he wanted to buy. The man then announced that it was a stickup, showed the clerk his handgun and demanded money from the cash register.

The robber said, "I don't want to hurt you," the video shows.

After the clerk handed over some cash, the robber herded the clerk into a back room. Video then shows him grabbing the vitamins he pretended to buy as he ran out of the store.

The clerk then dashed out of the store, talking on a cell phone, and wrote down the robber's license plate number, police said.

Callis got away with about $330, investigators said.
