Authorities issued a Silver Alert for a missing elderly man from Winston-Salem shortly after midnight Thursday.

Charles Mitchell Guffey, 79, was last seen in Forsyth County at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. He was thought to be driving a tan, four-door 1997 Buick LeSabre, with N.C. license plate number VZF-1335.

Authorities believe he might be traveling in or to Davie, Iredell, Stokes, Surry, Forsyth or Davidson counties.

Guffey is described as a white man, standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 230 pounds. He was last seen wearing beige khaki pants, a brown long-sleeved T-shirt and beige lace-up shoes.

Silver Alerts are issued when authorities believe a missing adult suffers from a cognitive impairment. Guffey has dementia, officials said.

Anyone with information on Guffey's whereabouts is asked to call Winston-Salem police at 336-773-7700.

Hope he is found safe...but shouldn't have been driving! I expected to read about someone who "wandered" from an assisted living facility or home on foot...not someone who the state granted a driver's license!!! I'm not saying all elderly people shouldn't be able to drive, but those w/ significant cognitive impairments shouldn't be able to get behind a wheel no matter what age!

I'm glad they created Silver Alert! It's a great service!

I hope this man is found safe! My heart goes out to him and his family. I can't imagine the worry they must be feeling!

Stories like this break my heart, b/c my mom also suffers from dementia. I'm glad they have the silver alert out there. I hope they find him safe soon.

I hope they find him soon.
