APEX, N.C. — Both sides of U.S. Highway 1 in Apex were reopened after a fatal accident early Monday morning.

Salvador Flores-Vasauez, 41, of Durham, was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross northbound U.S. 1 at about 2:45 a.m., authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver, Nathan Francis, 28, of Sanford, wasn't at fault and would not be charged.

The accident forced authorities to close U.S. 1 between N.C. Highway 55 and New Hill-Holloman Road for 2½ hours. Traffic was detoured and then shut down for a while, causing back-ups of 30 to 60 minutes.

All lanes were reopened by 5:15 a.m., and traffic was flowing freely through the area.

Investigators were trying to determine why Flores-Vasauez was on U.S. 1. His body was expected to be taken to the state Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
