— Police on Friday found a weapon in a shopping center pond, but it was too early to say whether the weapon was linked to a Christmas morning shooting death.

Crews used four pumps to drain a retention pond behind a Wal-Mart at the Westwood Shopping Center Thursday afternoon and evening while investigators searched for evidence in the shooting.

Derrick Davis, 26, was shot and killed early Christmas morning, but police said it appeared to be an accidental shooting.

Davis ran out of gas in the parking lot of a Kangaroo gas station and was in the vehicle with two men at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday when he was shot. While the men were waiting for someone to pick them up, a gun was fired and Davis was hit, police said.

Police have not released the identities of the two men in the car with him or where on the body Davis was shot.

you know it all cheeky...tell me the naacp is not the most racist organization in existance

Ok, how do you know he was black? Did you just assume it? Should I believe that each teenager that drives drunk and kills themselves and others is white? Should I assume whenever a child goes to school and guns down classmates or walks into a mall and kills innocent people is white?

Violence is not exclusive to race. And how do you know if his parents are college educated or not? Is that an uneducated and unfounded guess????

These poor black boys whose lives are dedicated to shooting one another over "insults"--or what they call "dissing"--deserve a decent life--a planned birth, a caring mother, but what so many of them have is an accidental birth to a teen mother who has no idea of how to parent a child. Teens should wait to have children till they have established themselves--through education and work, through dignity and self-respect. The media should start an ad campaign devoted to warning teens about the dangers of unwanted pregnancies--and the taxpayer should provide incentives with their tax dollars. So many lives could be improved this way.

I would like to make the following comments in response to various comments posted about this story:
    1. I am a former resident of Wilson and city employee.
    2. I personally worked on a committees with Derek's mother and grandfather Bill Pitt.

I would like to say that a city is what the residents make it. Derek's family served on public committees and actively contribute to a better Wilson. We all know that the media can speculate and spin a story to form a certain public opinion.

It is very tiring to read ignorant posted comments that are always based on the race of the victims and/or accused. Who are you to insult a victim, his family, African American organizations and public officials.

If you want to know where the NAACP is.....first ask yourself why the organization was formed! Because certain races could not look past race! The ignorant comments posted in response to stories of AA victims and those accused of crimes keep the NAACP active and we are going anywhere!

Tell him, slappy! Wilson is not the crime ridden place he descibes, and usually when this kind of thing happens, it's not random. Either way, it's terrible that it happens. And we have an awesome pd and sheriff's dept!

A very strange story: the way the incident is described in the article makes little sense. On the otherhand, a shooting at a gas station at a wierd time of the morning makes little sense either unless drugs were involved.

NCTravellinman wrote, Slappy, myrtlebeachrock is correct. I also lived there for 7 yrs. before we were able to escape. More specifically, Wiltson doesn't have that much more OVERALL crime than the other 3rd world towns in eastern NC, just more VIOLENT crimes for such a small city. Wiltson is also a midpoint illegal drug exchange between drug mules from Miami and NY. The Wiltson cops know it.

I have to disagree with you NCTravellinman. I've lived here by choice, yes by choice for over 30 years. I know for a fact that the crime rate (including violent crime) here is lower than other NC towns. It sounds like you may be traveling too much or are just pi$@ed off with Eastern NC (the 3rd towns you refer to). Maybe you were part off the problem. Oh by the way it's spelled Wilson not Wiltson. Even us people in 3rd world towns can spell.

Myrtlebeachrock, before you bad mouth Wilson to much you need to look at the crime in other towns such as Rocky Mount, Greenville, Raleigh, Durham, etc. Wilson’s crime rate is lower than all of them. You need to do the same for property taxes. Have you seen the increase in Wake County? Don’t get me wrong, Wilson has problems just not as bad as some other places.
