GARNER — A 16-year-old boy accidentally killed his baby sister after running over her with a sport utility vehicle Monday evening in Garner.

Zachary Charles Ionadi was going to dinner with his younger brother when he hit his half-sister, Carissa Ionadi, troopers said.

"He was unaware that his 18-month-old half-sister was outside, and after he backed out of the driveway into the cul-de-sac and proceeded forward, he ran over top of her," said Trooper Matt Cape.

Carissa later died.

After hitting his half-sister, Zachary ran inside the house with Carissa and told his father and step-mother, who called 911. Distraught and crying, Zachary ran from the home. Authorities later found him at another house off Sauls Road.

Troopers said it appeared to be a terrible accident, but they called Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby from the scene to discuss possible charges.

Troopers said Tuesday morning that it was decided that no charges would be filed in the accident.

After interviewing Zachary, troopers took him to WakeMed to be with the rest of his family. Zachary lives in Texas and was visiting his father for the holidays.
