2 Men Charged in Clayton Bank Robbery

Clayton Police officers were dispatched shortly after noon to the RBC Centura Bank located at 11861 Highway 70 West near Shotwell Road in Clayton.

Bank employees told police two men robbed the bank and fled on foot into a wooded area behind a shopping center.

Minutes later, a Clayton police officer sighted a black 1989 Jeep Cherokee with two occupants at an excessive speed on the parking lot of the Amelia Village Apts. The passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled into some nearby woods, police said.

The officer chased the man identified as Derrick LaMont Massenburg, 24, into the woods and captured him at 12:58 pm.

Another Clayton officer observed the fleeing Jeep heading north on Amelia Church Road. The driver attempted to elude the officer by driving behind a store, but he later lost control of his vehicle, striking a tree.

Authorities said the driver fled on foot into the woods. A perimeter of officers was established, and nearby Clayton High School, West Clayton Elementary School and West Clayton Middle Schools were placed on temporary lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Police later captured Charles David Cain, 41, behind Matthews Motors on Highway 70. Officers transported Cain to Johnston Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, but no one else was injured.

The investigation is ongoing at this time, but both will be charged with bank robbery and other charges are being considered, yet no additional suspects are being sought at this time.

Both men listed their addresses as 312 Tryon Road in Raleigh, which is a privately-managed halfway house for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
