— The Durham Police Department wants everyone to have a safe holiday season.  Here are some safety tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Be alert to suspicious people and vehicles.
  • Avoid dangerous situations.

If You Are Traveling:

  • Get an automatic timer for your lights.
  • Ask a neighbor to watch your home and park in your driveway periodically.
  • Don’t forget to have mail , newspaper and deliveries stopped.

If You Are Out For The Evening:

  • Turn on lights, radio or a TV so that it looks like someone is home.
  • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
  • Don’t display gifts where they can be seen from the outside.

If You Are Out Shopping:

  • Stay alert and be aware of what is going on around you at all times.
  • Park in well-lit areas, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and place all shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card whenever
  • Pay attention to people walking in front of and behind you.
  • Always lock your vehicle and store all items out of sight.
  • If you take packages to the car but plan to return to the store or mall, drive to a new location.
  • When returning to your vehicle (or home), have your keys in your hand ready to open the door.

Good suggestions, Steve. They are good ideas to use, no matter where you live, whether Durham, NC or elsewhere.

I truly don't understand the fear of Durham, maybe that it is diverse???I don't know, I love it here and in my 48 years have never felt like I may get murdered! Think about people, live in fear or enjoy your life, most murdered people know the person who killed them. So take personal responsilblity and don't hang out with people who Kill other People!!! Their are many many wonderful things to do in Durham, places to go, life to live! (So for comments from people in other places, if you don't like it stay where you are we like cool people anyway)

Steve.... Great comment! but about the story.... If the Durham police told me it was raining outside, I'd have to go to a window to look for myself. The DPD has lost ALL credibility with the corruption... Did everyone read the the story a fews back where they had Promoted the incompetent
detective from the lacrosse case. Now they are looking into some other wrong doings by this same moron. These idiots have ruined Durham.

Safety tips for Durham: stay at home, door locked and barred, lights low inside, bright outside, loyal guard dog to the right of you, your shotgun -- locked and loaded to the left, vest on, cell phone at the ready, and prayers said. Stay away from Angier Ave, etc.

Durham has a high murder rate, not other crimes. It's probably more about who you know, if you know what I mean.
