No Arrests in Hit-and-Run Accident; Benefit Held for Victim
There are few clues and even fewer leads in a hit-and-run that left a Johnston County teenager fighting for this life. His family and friends held a benefit Saturday to help raise awareness of the investigation.
Posted — UpdatedOn Oct. 19, Andrew Lee was riding his bike along Highway 301 near the Johnston-Wilson County line when a car struck him. The driver of the vehicle didn't stop and has yet to be identified.
EMS transported Lee to Johnston Memorial Hospital, he was then life-flighted to Duke University Medical Center.
“You hate it because you know there's nothing you can do, but then also it kind of makes you ill. And ill at the person, whoever did this to him,” Kris Lee, brother of the victim, said.
Lee's family said the 18-year-old has brain damage. He was unable to speak until recently, when he uttered a few words to his family.
“It was like a million dollars to me. It was very special to be hearing him say anything cause they didn't know whether he would talk at all or not,” grandmother Lois Lee said.
Family and friends held a benefit Saturday to help with Lee's rising medical costs and to raise awareness of the investigation.
“He's my ray of sunshine. I need him. I love him. We all miss him. This is just something bad that somebody could do this and I hope we find him,” Lois Lee said.
Lee remained listed in critical condition Saturday at Duke University Medical Center.
Investigators said the vehicle that hit Andrew would likely have front-end damage and a missing side mirror. They said they believe the car might have been a Ford Thunderbird or Mercury Cougar, 1989 to 1996 model.
Lee's family has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
