Searchers Find Missing Man, Boy in Harnett County

Posted October 28, 2007

— A 41-year-old man and his 6-year-old neighbor were found safe early Sunday morning after they got lost in the woods while four-wheeling on Saturday.

A mobile command center was set up at Macedonia Baptist Church in Harnett County overnight after the man called home around 7 p.m. and reported they were lost near Shearon Harris Lake.

During the call, the man's cell phone died, so dozens of searchers on four-wheelers were called out to help. Wake County authorities also had a boat on the lake, just in case.

Authorities said the sound of the searchers' four-wheelers led the man and boy to safety. They were cold and wet, but otherwise OK, officials said.

About 50 people were involved in the search, which was headed up by the Harnett County Search and Rescue.

Authorities did not release the names of the man and boy.

It was not a father/son outing.... The man and boy were not related.

"It's great they were found unharmed. And it's grea that they had the father/son togetherness day. What I don't understand is how parents can purposefully show children about breaking the law. Whether it is letting them drive or back up the car in the driveway or riding 4 wheelers in the woods. No wonder kids are the way they are today. Parents are partly to blame, showing them the way."

showing them the way? yes, us parents who give a flip about our children learning right from wrong or if our children know anything at all about life do tend to "show them the way"

you have your opinion, as for me, I choose to continue to show mine the way.

Gatechfan - I am thinking the same thing! I would never let my 6 year old on a 4-wheeler with a neighbor! Especially, to go off into the woods.

Why do people keep getting lost in the woods? Do they not have the skills to find themselves and our children out? What is the problem if you are unable to find your way out dont go into the woods!!!!!

and reading some of the comments others left-- you all realize this was not the childs father?- it was a neighbor.. some of you are comparing it to a father/son outing.. it was not. Either I read the story or some of you did not?

As a parent of a 6 year old and one who thinks the world of my neighbors... I still would never ever let my 6 year old go out into the woods with a 41 year old man-- alone---. If it was with boyscouts, maybe- there are other children there. But this scenerio, I don't think so. I am however very happy they are both safe and alive. !

I grew up there, been riding those trails for about 20 years now. That is true, it is very easy to get lost.

I, as well, am glad to see parents getting their children outside. It beats them setting in front of the TV or computer.

Nursevb8, you must not have any kids. You are correct, children watch everything their parents do, but that is the point. You have to teach them before somone else does. It is not breaking the law, it is teaching them the proper way to do somthing before they HAVE to do it.

I have rode in the area where they were, it can become very easy to get lost, but it is good to see that someone is still teaching the value of the outdoors.
