HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — The state Highway Patrol said Tuesday evening that the driver killed in the wreck of his tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 in orange County was Chalmer Lawrence Carrick of Denton in Davidson County.
The crash of Carrick's truck late Monday forced authorities to close the northbound side of the highway, and one lane remained closed didn't reopen until late Tuesday morning.

State troopers said the rig was hauling cardboard and furniture at about 11:30 p.m. Monday near Hillsborough when it went over a guardrail, overturned and caught fire.

Ricky Cherry, assistant Hillsborough fire chief, said crews had difficulty putting out the fire because of hot spots between the bundles of cardboard. He said crews had to pull apart each bundle and soak it.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation Tuesday.
