FORT BRAGG, N.C. — An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper died Wednesday of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit in Muqdadiyah, a mixed Sunni-Shiite town north of Baghdad, Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Andrew P. Nelson, 22, of Moorhead, Minn., was an Infantry Squad Leader with Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

“Staff Sgt. Andrew P. Nelson was a brilliant and brave leader,” said Major Mark Lastoria, Nelson’s troop commander. “More importantly he was an admirable son, brother and soon to be husband.”

Nelson joined the Army in June 2003. He arrived to the 82nd Airborne Division in October 2003 and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment. He was reassigned to the 1st Squadron. 73rd Cavalry in August 2006.

Nelson had three previous combat deployments: two in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with 3rd Battalion, 325th AIR from November 2003 to January 2004 and with the 1st Battalion, 325th AIR from December 2004 to March 2005; and one in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Nelson is survived by his mother, Susan Nelson; his sister, Jessica Nelson; and his uncle, Greg Pribula.

The unit will hold a memorial service in Iraq.
