Former Lobbyist Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

Posted August 31, 2007

— A Clayton woman pleaded guilty Friday to embezzling more than $200,000 from a political action committee she represented.

Stacy Flannery was sentenced to 60 days in jail and placed on probation for 30 months. She also was ordered to continue substance-abuse and mental-health counseling.

Flannery was director of legislative affairs for the North Carolina Health Care Facilities Association. She was charged last month with stealing money from the group's PAC over a seven-year period.

She apologized in court Friday for violating people's trust and said she is working hard to regain it.

The PAC has already been repaid all of the money taken from it, officials said. Flannery also paid the group's legal fees.

WRAL--"She apologized in court Friday for violating people's trust and said she is working hard to regain it."

She's got a rough row to hoe getting that accomplished. Embezzlement along with substance abuse and mental health issues ... ain't gonna be easy.

"EA" usually means "Enrolled Agent" with certain IRS privileges.

WRAL makes NO reference to such. Is that what you mean, yeahright2?

I forgot, when an EA apologizes we all forgive them and give them a light sentence.

It was well worth her stealing the 200k. She only received 60 days and 30 month of probation - which will be cut in half. why not rob someone

  • yeahright2 Aug 31, 2007

Why only 60 days. She could get that for petty theft. This was 200K. Teach her theiving but a lesson!

If she had all that money to pay PAC back plus their legal fees, why did she steal it in the first place?
