ROLESVILLE, N.C. — Investigators returned to the scene Wednesday of a major multi-house fire that happened at the Village at Rolesville development. The fire destroyed two homes and left others damaged.

Officials with the Rolesville Fire Department, the Wake County Fire Marshal's Office, and the State Bureau of Investigation were sorting through the rubble of Tuesday's fire on Ashbrittle Drive.

Investigators said they hoped to determine the cause of the fire by the end of Wednesday, but they said they already did not believe the fire was suspicious. Meanwhile, many residents affected by the fire are thankful to be alive.

"I ran down the stairs. As soon as I opened the door, it was intense heat," said resident Jill Dixon. "You could see flames shooting up. We just got out of the house. Neighbors were yelling, 'Get out of the house.'"

Authorities said no one was injured as the fire spread quickly, but two dogs died in one home. Several firefighters were also treated for heat exhaustion, but none were taken to the hospital.

The heat from the flames were so intense, it melted the siding on nearby houses. The fire chief said that because the homes were so close together, the blaze was hard to contain.

As a result of the fire, residents are raising questions about the proximity of the houses and how that may have played a role as to how the fire spread so quickly.

A committee made up of building inspectors and developers is being formed to discuss whether zoning laws may need to be changed.
