5 Injured in I-85 Accident

Posted August 22, 2007

— Highway Patrol troopers said five people were taken to area hospitals early Wednesday morning after an accident on Interstate 85.

The accident occurred at around 1 a.m. when a car traveling north near the I-40 split in Orange County struck a truck pulling a trailer.

Investigators said the car hit the trailer, causing the truck to lose control and flip on its side. The car landed on its roof.

Authorities said the driver of the truck was taken to UNC Hospitals. Four people inside of the car, including two children, were taken to Duke Medical Center. Troopers said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Troopers said they believe speed was a factor in the accident. There was no word on whether they planned to charge anyone.

    idiot driver.

  • NC Sunshine Aug 22, 2007

And besides... this isn't about how fast or what kind of car I drive. Or even which lane I drive in. This is about people taking responsibility for driving safely, no matter what their age is. There are headlines on WRAL everyday about people who were hurt and/or killed because some nut out there wasn't driving in a safe manner. There's another one today where a 76 year old died of injuries received in an accident because a 21 year old ran a stop light.

Nope ABM you couldn't be farther from the truth. I actually drive a mid-size GMC SUV and I never go less than 72 in the left hand lane, unless of course, the car ahead of me is being pokey pokey!

NC Sunshine... that explains it 43, and you prob drive a Honda? Right?

  • Z Man Aug 22, 2007

Hard not to speculate that the car (probably speeding) probably made a quick cutover move to either stay on 85 or 40. Trailer just happened to get in the way. How dare that trailer.

See it all the time. If you're not paying attention and you're about to miss your exit and you're not 100% confident you can change lanes safely, proceed to the next exit and turn around. Better yet, you're driving and you have others lives in your hands - so get off the stinkin phone and pay attention!

    Thank you Rolling Along.

I am certainly aware of when to use the left lane and when not. It seems that no matter which lane I'm in or how fast I'm running (and I've tested a few), there is always a person (most times younger than my 43 years) riding my bumper.

A little more consideration of the consequences should something go wrong is all I'm asking.

ABM I get bumper riders no matter what lane I am in. If I happen to be passing a slower vehicle and am in the left lane I am legal the moron tailgating is breaking the law....so back off! Or I might have to slam on brakes to avoid something and collect a new trailer hitch cover....

I totally agree NC Sunshine. I too drive I-85 every day. The state could make enormous revenews if the Highway Patrol would only cruise up and down 85 every day for about a month. But that probably wouldn't do any good either.

I agree with ABM the left lane is for passing, not riding. If your in the left lane and someone is on your bumper (no matter how fast you are traveling) merge into the right lane. Let the troopers deal with the speeders, its not our job.
