MEBANE, N.C. — Highway Patrol troopers said five people were taken to area hospitals early Wednesday morning after an accident on Interstate 85.

The accident occurred at around 1 a.m. when a car traveling north near the I-40 split in Orange County struck a truck pulling a trailer.

Investigators said the car hit the trailer, causing the truck to lose control and flip on its side. The car landed on its roof.

Authorities said the driver of the truck was taken to UNC Hospitals. Four people inside of the car, including two children, were taken to Duke Medical Center. Troopers said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Troopers said they believe speed was a factor in the accident. There was no word on whether they planned to charge anyone.
