Congressman Hopes to Change Transportation Policy

RALEIGH — A North Carolina congressman hopes some good comes out of a deadly tankeraccident.

A woman died last week when her car was struck by a tanker on US 70in Johnston County. The tanker, carrying jet fuel, was headed to theNew River Marine Corps Air Station. The military used to send the fuel toNorth Carolina bases by barge and train.

After last week's accident, Congressman Walter Jones drafted a letter tothe President Clinton. He's asking the Department of Defense go back tothe old way of transporting the fuel.
