RALEIGH — Organizers of the skate-a-thon held at Raleigh's IcePlex Sunday afternoon hoped to raise $5,000 for pediatrics at WakeMed. Skaters of every stripe -- hockey, figure and the wobbly -- turned out, along with the mascot for the Carolina Hurricanes.
Members of the Raleigh Figure Skating Club and the Carolina Youth Hockey Asociation co-sponsored the event. They hope to stage it on an annual basis.
The funds raised will go to buy equipment needed for newborns and young children, along with toys.
In the first hour, more than 50 people arrived to put on skates and go around in circles for the kids.
