A man was killed when an Amtrak train hit him Friday night in western Raleigh.

Police say that an Hispanic man in his thirties was walking along the train tracks that traverse the N.C. State University campus near Hillsborough Street. At around 9:20 p.m., the conductor of the eastbound train spotted the man, blew the whistle, and tried to slow down. However, it was too late, and the man was hit.

The man's identity has not been released, pending notification of his next of kin.

The twenty passengers on the train were detained while investigators completed their initial review of the scene.

The fence along the tracks had several openings through which people could easily walk onto them. Investigators did not know why the man was on the tracks.
