Some flakes and sleet mixed with rain Monday afternoon, but there was noaccumulation of snow or ice on roadways in most parts of the Triangle. Itwas a different scene, however, in the western Piedmont, foothills andnorthern mountains.
At 3 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service reported the followingsnow totals:
Periods of snow were reported in Alamance, Orange, Durham, Chatham andWake counties, with snow sticking to some roads in Orange,Durham and Chatham counties.
An additional one to three inches was possible Monday night in thefoothills and mountains.
Authorities urged motorists to avoid Interstates 40 and 85 in theTriad, where road were ice and snow packed and numerous weather-relatedaccidents were reported. In Charlotte, more than 200 weather-relatedtraffic accidents were reported.
Around the Triangle, temperatures over the freezing point ensured thatmost of what fell Monday was rain, and what snow and sleet fell quicklymelted. By 5 p.m. Monday, the bulk of the storm had passed to the northand eastof the Triangle.
The flirtation with snow was due to a storm system overSouth Carolina that rapidly moved north and is dumping snow on theNortheast.
