DWI Net Active in Raleigh
Posted December 14, 1997
RALEIGH — Raleigh was one of six sites across the state whose motorists got special attention Saturday night. A DWI checkpoint was set up on the Beltline near the Walnut Avenue exit.
Five drivers were charged with driving while intoxicated, and 93 total arrests were made, the latter for a variety of infractions.
The checkpoint was manned from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The roadway was lit by huge overhead lights, and motorists were alerted to an unexpected stop.
Approximately six to eight officers stationed themselves along the road, and the same number of cars were flagged to come ahead in single file. Each car was checked by an officer. The driver was either told to go on or was directed off the road for further questioning.
