Charities Need Donations for Holiday Meals

Many agencies have food drives as holidays near.
RALEIGH — On Thanksgiving, Americans traditionally offerthanks for what they have, but the holiday is also about giving tothose who are less fortunate. This year, those who feel the needy areasking for help themselves.

About 1,500 people eat at the Raleigh Rescue Mission on Thanksgivingday, but the mission, and similar organizations, always need more help tomake holiday meals a reality for the poor.

Garette Haire takes the "giving" part of Thanksgiving very seriously.This year, he donated 400 pounds of meat to the Salvation Army.

Local agencies are banking on the generosity of people such as Haire.Durham radio station WRTP collected food at three Triangle grocery storesto feed people at three local missions on Thanksgiving. Mission directorDon Zoller says the food means a lot to the people at themission.

One woman brought bags and bags of food to the Helping Hand Mission.Victor Henderson says it's that sort of gesture that makes it allpossible.

The drive to get food donations doesn't end with the holidays. That's amessage Dawn Crotty of the Interfaith Food Shuttle hope everyone hears.

Many groups are looking for donations of any foods that families canput on their Thanksgiving tables, including the traditional turkey, beans,sweet potatoes, cranberries, bread and pumpkin pie.
