No one has claimed responsibility for the incident, but the universityis investigating it as a hate crime.
The prank came on the same day as a sit-in by students protesting the way they say blacks are treated at the school. Protesters say demandsremain unmet since the issue was first brought up 30 years ago.
A meeting with Duke's president, they say, has left them optimistic.

Among the students' demands are the recruitment of more black faculty,a full time director at Duke's black culture center, and a black dormitoryon campus.
