CHAPEL HILL — The University of North Carolina Police Chief Don Gold has gone on an indefinite leave of absence.
He cleared out his office earlier this week and turned in the keys to his unmarked police car.
University officials will not say why Gold has taken the leave. The vice chancellor for auxiliary services will oversee the department in Gold's absence.
She says the leave is not related to last month's underage drinking citation of a UNC trustee's daughter. The citation was issued in a campus parking lot after the UNC football team played Virginia.
Gold met earlier this week with the vice chancellor and the officer who wrote the citation.
The officer has filed a grievance about the case.
