Crown Coliseum To Open in Two Days

Posted October 22, 1997

— The Crown Coliseum in Cumberland County will open in two days, and WRAL's Rick Gallsaid the civic center commission thinks it is a gem.

Bob Smith, Civic Center Commission, said the coliseum is absolutely unbelievable.

After seven years of dreaming, planning, and building, the coliseum is finished. The $55 million coliseum surprised even its strongest supporters.

When you walk into the coliseum, you can't help but notice the seats. They're different colors: yellow, red, black and blue. The color scheme is supposed to represent confetti and streamers.

Commission members can't wait to show off their dream building. The minor league hockey team is getting ready for the grand opening. And there's plenty of action off the ice, as workers scramble to finish in time for the big night.

The construction won't be complete by Thursday. There's still quite a bit of work to do behind the scenes and in the parking lots.
