Man Accused of Shooting Self, Girlfriend Pleads Not Guilty

LOUISBURG — A Franklin County man who held police at bayfor seven days before apparently shooting his girlfriend and himself haspleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

A judge ruled last month Douglas Carter is competent to stand trial. Police say Carter kidnapped his girlfriend Anitra Coburn from her Greenvillehome and then allegedly shot her to death during the standoff outsideLouisburg.

His trial is scheduled to start in January.
